Mission Mangal Movie Review: Akshay Kumar and Vidya Balan are heart and soul of this space entertainer But that is IMPOSSIBLE--- This is a recurring line throughout Mission Mangal, and practically every character says it emphatically with an air of despair. But you forget, when you have Akshay Kumar around with a very fiercely determined Vidya Balan, how is anything impossible? And so, that's what Mission Mangal is all about, achieving the unthinkable. The film tells the inspiring tale of India's first Mars Mission, Mangalyaan, which was launched in 2013. Mission Mangal begins with the failure of GLSV Fat Boy, and Akshay heroically taking the blame for someone else's mistake. And so, he is shunted over to the Mars Mission, which no one expects anything from. But Akshay, who plays the role of Rakesh Dhawan is seemingly chilled. He doesn't believe in wasting a laddoo and enjoys humming cryptic songs about failure. He is a quirky scientist, with the heart and mind of ...
Batla House Movie Review: John Abraham film is an excellent concept but poorly executed Between 2005 and 2008, the ISI and its catspaw the Lakshkar-e-Taiba (LeT) set up a local 'franchise' to outsource terrorism. The franchise, the Indian Mujahideen (IM) and headed by the Bhatkal brothers, Riyaz and Yasin carried out a wave of bombings across India. The IM in turn, recruited disgruntled local youth to plant bombs in public spaces in Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Varanasi, Delhi and Hyderabad killing hundreds of civilians. The bombings halted when the IM terror cell was busted in Batla House after the deaths of two terror suspects and a police officer. This is the context for what is arguably the first mainstream film to look at this forgotten piece of recent history. Bollywood's quest for real life drama knocks at the door of Batla House. The film finds its protagonist in ACP Sanjeev Kumar Yadav (John Abraham) a real life key figure in the Delhi Police’s special cell. The movie...
The Zoya Factor Movie Review: Sonam Kapoor and Dulquer Salmaan film is no sixer With a little bit of luck, you can run amok!" Strangely, these lyrics from Audrey Hepburn's My Fair Lady come to mind when watching The Zoya Factor, starring Sonam Kapoor and Dulquer Salmaan. And indeed, rather than putting its cast and breezy premise to good use, the film runs amok and you slowly begin to wonder why you should sit through 2.5 hours of this. Based on Anuja Chauhan's book, The Zoya Factor, the film directed by Abhishek Sharma chronicles the story of Zoya Solanki, your seemingly average girl who lives in a "middle-class" palatial home that has two storeys and includes a massive terrace and a garden. In Sonam's attempt to break the fourth wall, she constantly talks to the camera in practically every shot for exposition, which just makes you wish that she could get a friend. She is believed to be lucky for cricket, as she was born the day India won the World Cup ...
Prassthanam: Sanjay Dutt vs Jackie Shroff face-off, 19 years after Mission Kashmir If you’ve seen the trailer of Prassthanam, you wouldn’t have been able to miss the part where Jackie Shroff and Sanjay Dutt are seen in the same frame. While Sanjay clearly essays the role of the head of a political party, Jackie is seen as his loyalist, almost his right-hand man. But, a strange turn of events brings the two, and other characters in this political drama, to a point of war, where they must choose between loyalty and integrity. If reports are to be believed, Prassthanam will see the two iconic actors in a cinematic face-off, so to speak, after 19 years. If that brings back memories of Mission Kashmir (2000), the Hrithik Roshan and Preity Zinta starrer, then you’re not alone. Another film you ought to have remembered by now is Khalnayak (1993), that also starred Madhuri Dixit. It is ironic how these two off-screen friends, Jackie Shroff and Sanjay Dutt seem to always play feuding forc...
Richa Chadha on film Section 375: Good scripts make me greedy Actor Richa Chadha on Tuesday said she would never let go of good scripts, which are few and far between, and would take up a film head on even if it meant playing an emotionally challenging role. In her latest, Section 375, Richa will be seen playing a lawyer navigating the judicial system and public perception of a rape survivor. The film also stars Akshaye Khanna. "Good scripts are so few and far between that when you get a good one, you become greedy. Everyone in this film is somebody I wanted to work with and deeply admire. So, this was a huge opportunity for me," Richa said. She was speaking at the trailer launch of the film, directed by Ajay Bahl. To play a public prosecutor in the film was a change for Richa, who described the characters she played so far as "atrangi" (quirky). "Every girl will relate to this character. It is about why you fight so aggressively for something you ...
Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas Movie Review: Saher Bammba excels in bland Karan Deol debut The key ingredients for a blockbuster Bollywood love story are a good-looking couple, mountains, songs and yes, a khandaan. Karan Deol's debut film, Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas, has it all. From the scenic beauty of the Himalayas to blackmails and family melodrama, Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas is made with every element required for a hit romantic film. Yet, it fails to deliver what is usually expected from a romantic film. Karan Deol, who is making his Bollywood debut with his father Sunny Deol's directorial film, seems too rookie to be an actor. He manages to make it through the entire film with only one expression. Only good thing about this otherwise-average film is debudante Saher Bammba. The mountain girl shines in this extended travel vlog of a film, which sees a little drama only towards the end. The screenplay is weak, which is unable to lift up the weaker performance of lead actor Karan Deol. Karan...
